امروزه، اضافه وزن و چاقي (به ترتيب نمايه توده بدني يا BMI بين
9/29-25 و 30 كيلوگرم بر متر مربع (1 )) به شكل اپيدمي جهاني در آمده
است، تا جايي كه سازمان جهاني بهداشت (WHO ) واژه "globesity"را براي آن
در نظر گرفته است. اپيدمي چاقي به جوامع صنعتي و پيشرفته محدود نبوده و
تخمين زده ميشود كه بيش از 115ميليون نفر در كشورهاي در حال توسعه از
مشكلات مربوط به چاقي رنج ميبرند (2). براي نمونه، در يك مطالعه ملي در
زنان 60-40 ساله شهري ايران، در 9/38% اضافه وزن و 9/27% چاقي مشاهده شده
است (3).
علاوه بر چاقي، هيپرليپيدمي نيز از مهمترين عوامل خطرساز
بيماريهاي قلبي – عروقي است (4) که خود اولين علت مرگ و مير شناخته شده
است(5). نكته قابل توجه اينكه چاقي، خود يك عامل خطرساز براي هيپرليپيدمي
بوده و هر ساله در كشورهاي مختلف هزينههاي هنگفتي صرف كنترل و درمان چاقي و
بيماريهاي مرتبط با آن از جمله هيپرليپيدمي ميشود كه اهميت پيشگيري و
درمان ارزانتر آن را بيشتر ميكند. براي مثال هزينههاي ملي مربوط به
تشخيص، درمان و مديريت اضافه وزن، چاقي و بيماريهاي مربوطه در ايالات
متحده 5/78 ميليارد دلار در سال 1998تخمين زده شده است (6).
بيش از
20سال پيش، از آناليز دادههاي اولين بررسي ملي سلامت و تغذيه(NHANES-I)
آمريكا (7و8) ارتباط معكوس بين دريافت كلسيم و وزن گزارش شد. مطالعه
NHANES-III(9) و مطالعات مقطعي بعدي نشان دادند كه افزايش دريافت كلسيم با
BMIو وزن پايينتر (10و11)، چربي تام بدني كمتر (15-12، 7)، چربي شكمي
كمتر (16، 13،12، 7)، محيط كمر كمتر ( 17و 7 ) و حتي برگشت وزن كمتر پس از
رژيمهاي كاهش وزن (18و12) همراه بوده و اين تاثيرات در سنين كمتر از 18
سال نيز مشاهده ميشود (23-19).
